The Ministry of Local Administration and Services in the Syrian Interim Government organized a workshop focused on organizations concerned with governance and local administration. The event took place in Gaziantep, Türkiye, in collaboration with the Legal Platform represented by the Assistance Coordination Unit and hosted by the Stabilization Support Unit.
The workshop was attended by Abdul Ghani Shoubak, Deputy Minister of Local Administration and Services, along with committee members and representatives of organizations dedicated to governance. These included the Assistance Coordination Unit, Stabilization Support Unit, Local Development and Small Projects Support, Local Development, Local Councils Unit, Midmar, Sycac NGO, the Free Syrian Lawyers Association, Doctors and Lawyers for Human Rights, Journalists for Human Rights, the Syriana Amal Team, the Women’s Support and Empowerment Unit, the Administrative Development Center, and the Hooz Community Center.
The workshop reviewed proposed amendments and provided a platform for attendees to present input and recommendations. These emphasized the need to represent displaced individuals within administrative units, empower women’s participation in local governance, ensure official and public oversight of local council activities, amend the representation and powers of the Supreme Local Administration Council, establish neighborhood committees and appoint local leaders (mukhtars), and revise the legal terms of councils to reflect these changes in the proposed amendments.
This workshop is part of efforts to complete the committee’s action plan, assigned by the interim government, to engage with organizations involved in governance and local administration. The aim is to gather suggestions and discussions from participants to develop and revise the executive regulations and bylaws of the existing Local Administration Law, ensuring active collaboration with relevant organizations.
