The Syrian Legal Committee issued a statement on Wednesday, stressing that the Assad regime is taking advantage of the earthquake catastrophe to achieve political and material gains, with the help of the United Nations and the countries that have supported the regime from the beginning of the Syrian revolution.
The committee stated that international law prohibits depriving the population of supplies necessary for their lives, including the right to receive humanitarian aid, medical goods for facilities, foodstuffs, clothes, and necessary clothing for children and pregnant women. The statement also highlighted that the opening of the Bab al-Salam and al-Raie border crossings does not require the approval of the criminal terrorist Assad regime, and they are basically not under its control.
The Committee denounced the regime’s approval to open the border crossings for a period of three months, which came with a Russian directive to undermine the issuance of a resolution in the Security Council for a full year opening of the border crossings.
Additionally, the Committee criticized the regime’s claim that the devastation in eastern Aleppo was the result of the earthquake. Despite the great humanitarian catastrophe resulting from the earthquake, the Syrian people believe that their real catastrophe lies in the survival of Assad who kills, displaces Syrians, and destroys Syria, the Committee concluded.
