The Syrian Negotiations Commission held a virtual meeting in its office in Geneva on Tuesday to discuss the mechanism of the cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid. In attendance were representatives of friendly states as well as Syrian and international civil society organizations.
President of the Commission, Badr Jamous, said that the meeting focused on discussing one of the most important issues affecting the Syrian people, namely how to ensure that Syrian civilians receive live-saving humanitarian assistance.
Jamous added that participants reviewed legal alternatives to the UN resolutions on the cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid, noting that human rights organizations and bodies are studying these alternatives.
Jamous warned of the dire consequences of the suspension of cross-border aid as he stressed that humanitarian issues must not be exploited to achieve political gains.
Moreover, Jamous stressed the Syrian people’s right to achieve their aspirations in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254, which can put an end to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The Commission called on the countries supporting the Syrian people to ratchet up pressure on the Assad regime and its allies to force the regime to seriously engage in implementing UN resolutions, most importantly UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
