A delegation from the Syrian Negotiations Commission headed by Nasr Al-Hariri and which included Co-chair of the Commission Hadi Al-Bahra, met with the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen and his team at the United Nations Office in Geneva on Thursday.
The two sides discussed the latest preparations for the launch of the work of the Constitutional Committee and the measures taken by the UN envoy and his team to ensure the success of the first meeting of the Committee. The two sides also discussed the logistical preparations related to the meetings of the Constitutional Committee, including the sub-committee.
The two sides also discussed the situation on the ground and the efforts of the UN envoy with regards to confidence-building measures, especially the release of detainees.
Hariri stressed that the Syrian Negotiations Commission has completed preparations for its representatives in the Constitutional Committee.
Hariri told the UN envoy that the Commission stood ready to engage positively with the Constitutional Committee as he stressed that the successful launch of the Committee will serve the interests of all components of the Syrian people. He added that the Commission will seek to draw up a draft constitution meeting the aspirations of the Syrian people; safeguards their dignity; ensures their freedom and equality in rights and duties; achieves justice and democracy; restores the sovereignty of the people; and maintains the unity, territorial integrity and independence of the Syrian state.
Following the meeting with the UN envoy, Al-Bahra met with the envoy’s team to which he outlined the Commission’s vision of the rules of procedure that will help in the management of the meetings of the Constitutional Committee as well as its discussions and the decision-making.
Al-Bahra stressed the need for constant work to make achievements as soon as possible. He also stressed the importance of transparency and informing the Syrian people of the latest developments in the Committee’s work. He also underscored the need to find ways to communicate with the Syrian people in order to listen to their suggestions and views.
