The Syrian Negotiations Commission convened on Saturday in northwestern Syria, with some components participating remotely via video links from Damascus and Qamishli.
During the meeting, attendees delved into the most recent political developments in Syria, the activities of internal committees, their operational mechanisms, and the reinforcement of their roles. Special attention was given to strengthening the Detainees Committee, the Legal Committee, the Constitutional Committee, and the Elections Committee.
In the course of the meeting, Badr Jamous was re-elected as the chairman of the Negotiations Commission for a second term, and Safwan Akash was elected as secretary.
In a press briefing following the gathering, Jamous reiterated the Commission’s stance against the division of Syria, emphasizing their aspiration for a unified country. He expressed hopes that all components of the Commission will eventually convene in one location within Syria. Jamous pinpointed the Commission’s core challenge as the Assad regime and its persistent obstruction of the political process, which has remained stagnant for years.
Turning to the detainee issue, Jamous clarified that the Commission’s mission is to maintain the detainees’ plight on the agenda of the United Nations and the international community until a political solution aligned with UN Resolution 2254 is achieved. He underscored the Commission’s commitment to exerting both political and public pressure to ensure that every Syrian family can ascertain the fate of their loved ones.
