The Syrian Negotiations Commission said that the formation of the Constitutional Committee under the auspices of the United Nations will be a gateway to the full implementation of the provision of UN Security Council resolution 2254, especially the release of detainees and the formation of a Transitional Governing Body (TGB) key to providing a safe, neutral environment in order to ensure a transition for a better future.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Commission expressed its appreciation for the efforts exerted to accomplish this step as it called on members of the Committee to “make its goal Syria’s highest interest and a return to a free, dignified life.”
The Commission stressed that it will remain constantly vigilant against any attempts by the Assad regime to impede the work of the Committee. “We recognize that the road is extremely difficult, but any action remains easy compared to the immense sacrifices the Syrian people are making.”
The UN Secretary-General of Antonio Guterres on Monday announced the formation of the Constitutional Committee, telling reporters that the UN will facilitate the work of the Committee in Geneva where it will convene in the coming weeks.
Guterres pointed out that his special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, had facilitated the agreement in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015), stressing the need to immediately stop attacks against civilian targets. He urged the UN Security Council member states to support the efforts to reach a ceasefire. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
