The Syrian Negotiations Commission on Thursday sent two separate letters to the UN envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen denouncing the Assad regime’s barbaric bombardment against civilians in Idlib and demanding the resumption of negotiations to discuss the rest of the baskets in parallel with the work of the Constitutional Committee.
The Commission stressed that the bombing of civilians constituted war crimes under the Rome Statute and international humanitarian law.
The Commission called on the United Nations to convene an urgent Security Council meeting to condemn the Assad regime’s and its backers’ escalating attacks against civilians and adopt a binding resolution for a ceasefire.
The Commission pointed out that the outcomes of the Constitutional Committee need a safe, fair and impartial environment for all Syrians, adding that this environment needs the discussion of the formation of a governing body.
Moreover, the Commission pointed to the importance of discussing the basket of elections in line with Article 4 of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 which expressed the UN Security Council’s support for a political process that establishes a credible, inclusive and non-sectarian system of rule as for free and fair elections.
