Syrian Negotiations Commission Visits New York & Demands Reconsideration of UNSC Resolution 2401

A delegation of the Syrian Negotiations Commission arrived in New York City on Monday to attend the United Nations session on the humanitarian situation in the Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta. The delegation will hold meetings with representatives of countries supporting the Syrian Revolution to hold consultations and emphasize the need to bring military operations against civilians in Syria to an end.

The delegation began the visit with a meeting with Germany’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Christoph Heusgen. Both sides discussed the latest political and field developments, especially the ongoing onslaught on eastern Ghouta by the Assad regime and its backers. The delegation stressed the need to discuss the rewording of UN Security Council resolution 2401 so that it becomes abiding and containing monitoring mechanisms along with punishing those who violates it.

The Commission pointed that the current wording of the resolution “allowed the Assad regime and its backers to see in it a license to carry on with the killings against the Syrian people and pursuing a military solution as they continue to reject any political negotiation process.”

For his part, German ambassador reaffirmed his country’s strong support for the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2401 calling for a cease-fire. He said that non-compliance is not an option, adding that Berlin is seeking to reach international consensus on the implementation of the resolution.

The Commission said that its delegation seeks through the current visit to communicate with all the UN Security Council member states to “urge them to assume their humanitarian and legal responsibilities towards the war crimes being committed by the Assad regime and its backers against the Syrian people, especially in eastern Ghouta.”

The Commission underscored that Russia bears full legal responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and that its military forces were deployed in Syria and participating in hostilities alongside the Assad regime.

Furthermore, the Commission said that Russia has effectively become the force capable of using its influence to put pressure on the Assad regime and Iran and push for a political solution leading to the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. It stressed that such pressure is needed to putt an end to the bloodshed and to Iran’s forced displacement operations aimed at changing the demographic landscape in Syria in preparation for the implementation of its expansionist projects in the region. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
