The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) expressed appreciation for the statements made by the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during the opening speech at the fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries held in Doha from 5-9 March. Sheikh Tamim expressed surprise at the delay in relief aid reaching victims of the earthquake in Syria and stressed the importance of not exploiting the tragedy for political gain.
The President of the SOC, Salem Al-Meslet, emphasized that the State of Qatar’s firm positions on Syrian issues, whether political or humanitarian, will remain forever etched in the Syrian people’s minds. He added that the Syrian people, who have already endured 12 years of suffering due to the crimes of the Assad regime, have been further impacted by the devastating earthquake. Qatar was one of the first countries to provide assistance and extend a helping hand to the affected communities, he stressed.
Al-Meslet noted that the earthquake affected the liberated areas in northwestern Syria more than others, making it critical to focus on saving the affected people and avoid political exploitation of the disaster. Furthermore, he called on the United Nations to investigate the delay in providing aid to the liberated areas and to avoid repeating the same mistakes or making baseless excuses that disregard the intelligence of millions.
