The opposition’s High Negotiations Committee (HNC) and the Syrian Coalition intend to present their vision for a political solution in Syria during a conference on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly meeting in New York later today. Representatives of the Syrian people countries will attend the conference which is going to be organized by Saudi Arabia.
President of the Syrian Coalition Anas Alabdah, who is currently in New York for the conference, said that the Syrian opposition is working with the international community to find a solution in Syria. He stressed that this solution must ensure alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people and meet the aspirations of the Syrian people for justice and dignity.
Alabdah said that the Assad regime has been actively seeking to impede all international efforts with the aim of clinging to power.
Alabdah and the HNC General Coordinator Riad Hijab met with the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Frederica Mogherini at the UN headquarters earlier today. Mogherini said the EU supports the opposition’s vision for a political solution in Syria, expressing concern over the “deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria.”
Hijab urged the international community to put an end to the forced mass displacement policy the Assad regime pursues to bring about a demographic change in Syria. He reiterated that Bashar al-Assad must not be part of the transitional process.
Hijab noted that HNC has not yet been informed about the details of the Russian-US agreement on Syria. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
