Secretary-General of the Syrian Coalition Mohammed Yahya Maktabi and head of the Free Syrian Football Association agreed to form the Syrian Supreme Sport Committee during a meeting held yesterday. The committee includes prominent athletes from most games and will be responsible for laying the foundation for a modern sport according to academic and specialized standards.
It will organize a general conference of Syrian sports and will send calls to all athletes to attend. New sports associations will emerge out of the conference within the framework of democracy and transparency.
It was also agreed to reach out to European, national and regional organizations and companies to support the Syrian modern sport through commercial and humanitarian sponsorship contracts.
Maktabi said that the Syrian Coalition would take on the war crimes file against Syrian athletes which was prepared by Mr. Ayman Qashit.
The participants confirmed that Syrian athletes should have a major role in rebuilding the homeland, pointing to the need to adopt the Syrian sports file to present an alternative to the regime’s sports organizations.
Maktabi commended the tremendous efforts made by Syrian athletes who have proven their ability to reunite ranks and bring life to football.
Qashit stressed independence of the committee and will reach out to all Syrian athletes to unite independently away from political and economic interventions.
It is worth mentioning that the Free Syrian Football Association was founded on June 5, 2015 under the slogan “football so that life goes on.” It is based in northern Rural Idlib and comprises over 1,500 players from all parts of Syria. “The Liberated Areas League” kicked off last Monday and includes several teams.
