Member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Ahmed Tomeh, revealed that the Assad regime struck a deal with the West. Under this agreement, the regime vowed not to intervene in the ongoing Gaza conflict or to provoke a new front against the Israeli occupation following its aggression against the Palestinian people.
In an interview with the Arabi 21 website, Tomeh emphasized that the Assad regime also committed to quashing any demonstrations in support of Gaza within the country and thwarting any potential actions by Palestinian factions in Syria. He further noted that the Assad regime aims to reclaim its status as a “rogue state,” wherein Western countries disregard its actions, in exchange for refraining from involvement in the Gaza conflict.
Tomeh highlighted the complexity of the Syrian conflict, describing it as one of the most intricate global crises. He underscored the heightened polarization between the Eastern and Western camps and criticized the Eastern camp for obstructing potential solutions in Syria due to the Western camp’s inaction and lethargy, including resolutions from the UN Security Council.
He continued, stating, “The international community, recognizing the diminished intensity of the Syrian conflict and the challenges in reaching a political resolution, has opted to maintain the current status quo. It hopes for internal developments, such as the collapse of the Assad regime or the exhaustion of revolutionary forces, or for weaknesses within either the Eastern or Western camps, to pave the way for acceptable solutions proposed by regional and international stakeholders.”
