The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that the Assad regime informed the family of Amjad Al-Abdullah, a student at the Faculty of Medicine at Al-Furat University in Deir Ezzor, of his death while in detention. The Network said that the death was most likely due to torture and medical neglect.
The Network said that the deceased was from Al-Qusour neighborhood in Deir Ezzor city. He was detained in June 2014 when regime forces raided his house, forcibly disappearing him ever since.
The Network indicated that approximately 132,667 Syrian citizens are still under arrest or enforced disappearance in the regime’s prisons, adding that around 14,464 Syrian citizens died due to torture in those centers.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) called on the United Nations to work seriously for the release of detainees and the disclosure of the fate of the missing. It pointed out that this issue is a source of concern for every Syrian family and causes them great pain as many years have passed without them knowing any information about their loved ones.
Despite the Assad regime’s claims about issuing an amnesty to detainees, it continues to carry out mass arrests and systematic torture against detainees in its custody.
