US lawmakers called on US President Joe Biden to take a clear stance on the situation in Syria and refuse the return the Assad regime to the international community’s fold.
In a letter to US President Joe Biden, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (Democratic), and James Risch, the top Republican on the foreign relations committee, as well as other senators expressed their concern that a growing number of Arab partners continue to consolidate their official and unofficial relations with the Assad regime.
The letter called for making sure that all states realize that normalization or the return of the Assad regime to the Arab League is unacceptable. It indicated that the tacit approval of official diplomatic dealings with the regime sets a dangerous precedent for tyrants who seek to commit similar crimes against humanity.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomed the move as it stressed that normalization of ties with a regime that manufactured and practiced terrorism and has always sought to sowed sedition and destabilize the region is not in the interest of any country, especially the brotherly Arab countries. It also said that normalization of ties with the regime will put more obstacles to the freedom and rights of Syrian people.
The SOC called for commitment to the Arab consensus in boycotting the criminal regime and not to allow the return of relations with it under any pretext. It also called for supporting the demands of the Syrian people to get rid of the regime of crime and terrorism, and to achieve a political transition to a state of freedom, justice and democracy.
