The US special envoy to Syria Michael Ratney said that the United States opposes giving any role for Bashar al-Assad in Syria’s future, adding that he must step aside to allow Syrians set about a workable transition process.
At a meeting in Berlin with the Syrian Coalition’s representative to Germany Bassam Abdullah, Ratney reiterated his country opposes the Russian air strikes targeting the moderate opposition and the civilian institutions in the rebel-held areas.
Abdullah reaffirms the Syrian Coalition’s rejection of giving any role for Assad to play in the transitional period or Syria’s future even for a single day, adding that this position is a fundamental guarantee for the success of a constructive transition process.
He calls on the United States to allow stepping up support for the Free Syrian Army to enable it repel the Russian-Iranian aggression on Syria and counter the ISIS.
Abdullah warns that amid political initiatives that are not based on a clear reference, the Assad regime is trying to gain more time in order to regain control of the areas it lost to rebel fighters. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
