Abdel Majeed Barakat, Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), said that the Assad regime, facing the collapse of its forces, is conducting a widespread campaign of arrests in areas under its control. The regime is targeting young people, university students, and children, forcibly recruiting them and sending them to the frontlines of combat, despite their lack of basic knowledge of how to handle weapons.
In a press statement, Barakat condemned the regime’s refusal to halt its crimes and end the bloodshed of Syrians, stressing that the regime is determined to take more lives and commit further atrocities against civilians. He warned that the country could collapse at any moment.
Barakat also expressed his disbelief at the international community’s continued passivity, urging immediate action to activate the political process and fully implement international resolutions related to the Syrian conflict, particularly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254.
He called on all military units and regime personnel to defect, lay down their arms, refuse to carry out bombing orders, and consider Syria’s future without Assad. Barakat urged the creation of a national army dedicated to protecting the Syrian people and land, rather than safeguarding an authoritarian regime.
