Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s political committee, Riyad Al-Hassan, presented the weekly political report in which he talked about the travesty of elections that the Assad regime has lately conducted in the areas under its control.
Al-Hassan stressed that these elections are illegal, adding that after the Assad regime agreed to set up the Constitutional Committee and agreed on its terms of reference, it tacitly acknowledged that it does not have a right to hold any elections except after a new constitution has been drawn up and that they would be conducted under the UN supervision.
Al-Hassan pointed out that the paper that the regime signed off on and which is the basis of the work of the Constitutional Committee contains the conditions for holding elections in the country, stressing that the Assad regime violated the conditions its previously accepted.
The Assad regime continues to procrastinate and tries to disrupt the work of the Constitutional Committee with the aim of passing these farcical elections, Al-Hassan added. He warned that the regime would continue with the same strategy in an attempt to hold the upcoming presidential elections.
These elections certainly do not have any legitimacy as nearly half of the Syrian people did not participate in them, Al-Hassan said. He made it clear that the Assad regime is not qualified to run the country and is unable to provide basic services to the population, in addition to causing 83% of Syrians to live below poverty line.
