Secretary of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdelbaset Abdullatif, criticized the participation of the Assad regime in the Second Baghdad International Conference on Combating Drugs. He called it a mockery of international values, norms, and the peoples of the world and the region. Abdullatif asserted that inviting the Assad regime to such a conference undermines the laws established by the international community over the past decades.
In a press statement, Abdullatif expressed that the attempts to rehabilitate the Assad regime are both surprising and illogical. He argued that the regime’s participation in a conference on combating drugs should be preceded by stopping its manufacture and trade of drugs, which are used as a tool for blackmailing neighboring countries.
Abdullatif highlighted that the Assad regime has expanded its destructive project from Syria to the entire region through the illegal drug trade. He pointed out that regional countries are attempting to solve the problem with misguided steps, thereby undermining public confidence in their governments.
He reiterated the demand for tighter sanctions on the Assad regime and urged that it be barred from participating in such conferences out of respect for the peoples of the region and the world. Abdullatif called for advancing the political process towards political transition in Syria in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254, as the basis for resolving all crises in Syria and the region.
