The Secretary-General of the political committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdulbasit Abdullatif, emphasized that the top priority today is to prevent the collapse of the Syrian state. He asserted that this was the intention of deposed President Bashar al-Assad over the past years and during his escape as well.
In a press statement, Abdullatif said that Bashar al-Assad’s approach to the revolution—through killing, destruction, and his grip on power, followed by his eventual flight from the country—reveals his primary goal: leaving Syria as a failed state in the event he could no longer remain in power.
He added that Syrians are starting a new chapter in their history, writing it together with unity and cooperation. He noted the concerted efforts by some officials who remain at their posts and by the forces that toppled Assad’s regime to preserve institutions and protect public and private properties.
Abdullatif pointed out that these efforts have created positive indicators and left a favorable impression among Syrians of all backgrounds and ethnicities, as well as within the international community, despite some incidents of chaos that occurred on the first day of the regime’s collapse.
He affirmed that there is a serious attempt to put an end to such incidents, restore order, and instruct state agencies to continue providing services to Syrians. This includes embassies, which are currently seeing a surge in visits from Syrians seeking travel documents to return to their homes.
