Member of the General Assembly of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Khuzama Al-Afif, has asserted that the Assad regime is seeking to quash the peaceful anti-regime movement in Suwayda. This comes in the wake of several months of peaceful protests that exposed the regime’s deceit and the fallacy of its claims. The regime is preparing to launch a military attack to crush this movement.
Al-Afif noted in a press statement that despite the regime’s efforts, the Suwayda protests have remained peaceful, showcasing the residents’ acute awareness. They have successfully thwarted the regime’s schemes and declined to engage in actions that would tarnish their peaceful demonstrations or the objectives articulated in their daily slogans, which call for the overthrow of the Assad regime and the implementation of UN Resolution 2254.
Emphasizing the unity among the people of Suwayda, Al-Afif underscored their steadfast refusal to yield to regime threats or relinquish their legitimate demands, which resonate with the aspirations of the entire Syrian people and the objectives of the Syrian revolution.
Al-Afif urged the international community to fulfill its obligations in safeguarding civilians in Suwayda and preventing the Assad regime from launching any military offensive against them. This appeal is particularly urgent given the regime’s extensive history of perpetrating massacres and egregious war crimes against civilians. Al-Afif held the United Nations accountable for any bloodshed that may occur in Suwayda.
