Coordinator of the Refugees and Displaced Persons Working Group in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Ahmad Baccora, strongly condemned the inflammatory and irresponsible remarks made by certain Lebanese officials and politicians against Syrian refugees in Lebanon. He emphasized that the presence of Syrians in Lebanon is legitimate, grounded in humanitarian norms and international law, as they sought refuge from the horrors of war and imminent danger to their lives and their families.
In a press statement, Baccora highlighted that the Hezbollah terrorist militia is actively engaged in hostilities on Syrian soil alongside the Assad regime. He noted that Hezbollah’s involvement extends to its representation in the Lebanese government and bears significant responsibility for displacing Syrians from their homes. Baccora stressed the necessity of directing efforts towards holding those perpetrating injustice accountable rather than targeting their victims.
Furthermore, Baccora underscored that the SOC will not remain passive in the face of systematic violations and escalating calls for violence against Syrian refugees, affirming its intent to seek support from the international community to ensure their protection.
Expressing gratitude, Baccora acknowledged the noble Lebanese people who have consistently stood in solidarity with the Syrian people amidst malicious campaigns seeking to undermine the fraternal relations between the two sisterly states.
Concluding his remarks, Baccora reiterated the SOC’s commitment to upholding the rights of Syrian refugees in accordance with international law. He called for concerted efforts to facilitate a political solution in Syria that enables the safe and voluntary return of refugees to their homeland.
