Ahmed al-Sayyid Youssef, a member of the political committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), emphasized the significance of Bashar al-Assad’s recent meeting with Falih al-Fayyad, the leader of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) terrorist militia. Youssef stressed that this meeting directly refutes any claims of the regime’s efforts to distance itself from Tehran, given the PMF militia’s unwavering allegiance to Iran.
Youssef further highlighted the photos coming out of the meeting, suggesting it resembled a gathering of contemporary gang leaders and militias. He underscored the thuggish nature of these regimes and militias, which operate under official guises while engaging in criminal activities.
Additionally, Youssef stressed the implications of al-Assad’s association with al-Fayyad, emphasizing the extent of the Syrian dictator’s subordination to Iran. He expressed astonishment at any suggestions that al-Assad might seek to break free from the influence and control of the Iranian mullahs regime.
Notably, al-Fayyad is one of the most prominent Iraqi officials with deep ties with Iran. Apart from leading the PMF militia, he has occupied key positions such as head of the National Security Service and National Security Advisor. He has also been linked to the Quds Force, a militia affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
