Ayman Al-Asimi, a member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, has condemned the visit of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to the Assad regime on Monday. Al-Asimi stated that if the visit was meant to show solidarity with Syria in facing the earthquake’s repercussions, Shoukry should have visited the regions in the liberated areas most affected by the earthquake.
He also stressed that the Egyptian aid should have gone to the affected people in those areas and not to the Assad regime, which is notorious for seizing and stealing humanitarian aid.
Al-Asimi ruled out the delivery of aid to those who deserve it, given the Assad regime’s track record. He added that the earthquake in Syria began in 2011, and countries rushing towards the regime during this period should stand by the Syrian people who were subjected to bombardment, killing, and displacement. Al-Asimi stressed that a natural earthquake is not a justification for normalization with the murderous regime.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition emphasized that the rapprochement with the Assad regime under the pretext of aiding the earthquake victims would only harm countries, given the regime’s malicious intentions and the malevolent Iranian agenda. The SOC also stressed that what the Assad regime destroyed during the past years far exceeds the devastation caused by the recent earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria on February 6.
