Member of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Bahjat al-Atassi, has underscored the ongoing threat posed by explosions from war remnants and unexploded ordnance left behind by the Assad regime and its allied militias. He lamented the loss of Syrian lives in various regions, emphasizing the urgent need for a widespread awareness campaign to educate the population about the dangers of war remnants.
Al-Atassi further highlighted that in recent years, the remnants of relentless bombing operations by the Assad regime and its allies have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people and the injury of thousands more, particularly children, describing such acts as war crimes added to the regime’s catalogue of brutal offenses.
Urging residents in various Syrian regions to steer clear of areas previously subjected to bombing and to avoid land routes that may have been sites of conflict or clashes, Al-Atassi warned of the regime forces’ indiscriminate planting of landmines in these zones.
According to the local Al-Khabour network, a 12-year-old child lost his life on Monday due to the explosion of a military projectile leftover from war in the Tuwamin area, southeast of al-Hasakah. Similarly, on February 13, another war remnants explosion occurred in the village of Al-Mughayir in the western countryside of Hama, claiming the life of one person. Additionally, on February 15, a landmine explosion in the village of Kafr Dael in the western countryside of Aleppo left two children injured.
The Syrian Civil Defense emphasized that with the regime’s ongoing war and deliberate use of cluster bombs, incendiary weapons, and other munitions alongside Russia, Syrians face a protracted threat to the lives of future generations, especially children, due to the enduring hazards posed by these remnants.
Since the beginning of 2024, Syrian Civil Defense teams have documented 24 explosions of war remnants in northwestern Syria, including 17 explosions of remnants from previous bombings and 7 landmine explosions resulting in the deaths of 7 people, including 4 children, and the injury of 29 others.
