President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, emphasized that the Assad regime’s ongoing atrocities against civilians, particularly children and women, underscore its persistent disregard for international laws and human rights. He criticized international bodies and justice enforcement mechanisms, asserting that they should actively work to enforce these treaties and laws.
Al-Bahra’s comments were prompted by the Syrian Network for Human Rights’ recent report on the number of victims in Syria, released on Monday. The report highlighted the continuous commission of crimes against Syrians since March 2011, indicating that 1,032 civilians were killed across Syria in 2023, including 181 children and 150 women.
According to the network’s findings, the Assad regime was responsible for the deaths of 225 civilians in the past year, including 57 children and 24 women. Russian forces killed 20 civilians, including 6 children and 5 women, while the ISIS terrorist group claimed the life of one civilian.
In December 2023 alone, the network documented the killing of 91 civilians, including 14 children and 13 women. Among them, 7 fell victim to torture by regime forces, 3 at the hands of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, and 1 at the hands of the PYD terrorist militia.
The report highlighted Daraa province’s highest death toll rate in 2023 at approximately 22% of the total, followed by Deir Ezzor with around 20%, and both Aleppo and Idlib provinces with approximately 14%.
Additionally, the report noted an ongoing toll from landmines in various Syrian regions, recording the deaths of 114 civilians, including 26 children and 11 women, since the beginning of 2023 due to landmine explosions.
