President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, lamented the lack of international action to rescue thousands suffering in Assad’s prisons, highlighting the case of Syrian activist Layla Shweikani, who died due to torture in regime custody.
Al-Bahra emphasized that despite ample evidence of Assad regime brutality against detainees, hundreds of thousands endure in what are described as “human slaughterhouses” due to insufficient international intervention.
February 19 marked the anniversary of Shweikani arrest by regime forces. She died under torture on December 28, 2016, with her family notified of her death about two years later.
The New York Times reported that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation was building a file against senior regime officials Ali Mamlouk and Jamil Al-Hassan for their involvement in Shweikani’s arrest and torture.
Shweikani, aged 26, endured months of brutal torture and coercion to falsely confess to crimes, leading to a rushed trial and execution by the regime in late 2016.
