President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem al-Meslet, stressed that the international silence on the tragedy unfolding in al-Rukban refugee camp is further worsening the living conditions in the camp which is under tightened blockade by the Assad regime. He said that the lives of the residents of the camp are now under serious risk after water allocated to the camp has recently been halved despite the smoldering heatwave hitting the region.
Al-Meslet pointed out that the Assad regime continues to commit the crime of blockade against on al-Rukban camp just as it had previously done against several Syrian cities and towns with the aim of controlling the camp and taking revenge on its residents. He called for urgent international intervention to save the lives of refugees in al-Rukban camp and secure a decent life for them.
The residents of al-Rukban camp, located in a desert area on the Syrian-Jordanian border, continue to suffer due to the lack of drinking water that reaches the camp from Jordan with support from the UNICEF.
The camp residents criticized the United Nations’ failure to secure water for the camp despite the heatwave that is scorching the area. They have recently organized a sit-in protest inside the camp to urge the United Nations to increase the water supply and improve its quality. The protesters held banners calling for the United Nations office in Amman to solve the problem of water shortages.
Meanwhile, activists launched a campaign on social media under the title ‘Save al-Rukban Camp’ with the aim of drawing the attention of humanitarian organizations working in Syrian to the suffering of about 7,500 refugees living in the camp.
