The anti-regime protests continue unabated in Suwayda city, where hundreds of people gathered at al-Karama Square on Friday. Protestors renewed their calls for freedom, dignity, and political change in accordance with UN Resolution 2254.
Protesters carried signs reaffirming their commitment to peaceful struggle until freedom is achieved, the country’s plundered wealth is reclaimed, and genuine institutions are built, free from cronyism and corruption.
The demonstrators emphasized that Syria remains unsafe under the Assad regime, denouncing the arbitrary sentences imposed by the regime on local residents. This was in reference to new arrest lists targeting over 100 activists involved in the peaceful movement, with charges such as “sabotaging state assets and equipment.”
Lawyer Muhannad Baraka recently published the names of individuals on six arrest lists labeled as “criminal offenses,” with five lists issued by an investigative judge in Suwayda and one by the military judiciary in Damascus. Baraka advised those named to avoid passing through checkpoints or traveling outside the province.
Suwayda 24, a local news network, reported that 14 civilians were subjected to arbitrary arrests and forced detentions in Suwayda Province during October.
The network documented that all those affected were male civilians, with all violations conducted by Assad regime security forces through extrajudicial arrests.
Among those detained, five civilians were arrested by security forces while returning from Lebanon despite the existence of a presidential amnesty decree. Additionally, the network documented the random arrest of seven civilians at Suwayda National Hospital during a search for wanted individuals.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) said that the Assad regime is attempting to suppress the peaceful movement in Suwayda, as this movement has exposed the regime’s lies and false claims.
The SOC highlighted that the anti-regime movement in Suwayda has remained peaceful, demonstrating the awareness of the people in thwarting the regime’s schemes and traps. The protesters have refused to engage in any actions that would distort their movement or their demands, which are consistently expressed through daily chants calling for the fall of the Assad regime and the implementation of UN Resolution 2254.
