The Syrian Coalition warned in a press statement of a “new massacre committed against the people trapped inside the neighborhoods of southern Damascus and Ghouta, after the siege imposed on the region for more than two and a half years.” This comes after the regime’s mobilization of about 30 tanks trying to break into the area by way of the Damascus-Daraa Highway. Large numbers of soldiers, Assad gang members, shabeeha, and militias were also deployed to assist the tanks in killing Syrians. The offensive came after heavy shelling on Damascus’s southern suburbs.
The Syrian Coalition declared earlier that a number of towns and cities and suburbs south of Damascus were “disaster areas,” calling the international community to respond immediately to the need to open humanitarian corridors to save the civilians trapped inside. The Coalition holds the international community and humanitarian organizations responsible for the tragedy that may result from their failure to intervene on behalf of the besieged civilians in these areas.
