The Assad regime’s security forces are continuing their raids on civilian homes in the suburbs of Damascus in search of young men to force them into military service. The most recent raid took place in the towns of Hazza and Ayn Tarma in rural Damascus.
Local activists reported that members of the regime’s Military Security Branch launched a search campaign targeting residential neighborhoods in the two towns to find individuals wanted for compulsory and reserve military service.
According to The Voice of the Capital website, the raids resulted in the arrest of four young men in Hazza and two others in Ayn Tarma. The detainees were taken to the Military Security Branch in Damascus for interrogation before being handed over to the Military Police branch, to be sent to units of Bashar al-Assad’s forces.
In February 2023, the Syrian Network for Human Rights documented the arrest of 137 civilians in Syria, including women and children, with half of them being detained by the regime’s security forces.
