The President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, strongly denounced the reported intention to invite the Assad regime to the upcoming Brussels donors’ conference, stating that such an invitation would be “unacceptable.” He emphasized that extending an invitation to the regime would be a blatant insult to the Syrian people and a complete disregard for their sacrifices. It would also serve as a reward for the crimes committed by the regime against its own people and would support its efforts to flood the region with illegal drugs.
Al-Meslet demanded that the international community hold the Assad regime accountable instead of rewarding it. He noted that while natural disasters cannot be prevented, the international community has surprisingly failed to put an end to the killing and destruction perpetrated by the Assad regime and its allies for the past twelve years.
Additionally, Al-Meslet expressed his gratitude to all countries that provided assistance to the Syrian people following the recent earthquake, and thanked them for their continued attention and care for the Syrian people. However, he stressed the importance of not honoring those who caused the tragedy faced by the Syrian people.
Al-Meslet highlighted that while the international community has focused on the consequences of the earthquake, it has forgotten about the ongoing suffering of the Syrian people at the hands of the Assad regime and its supporters for more than a decade.
He pointed out that while nearly 10,000 Syrians lost their lives in the earthquake, hundreds of thousands more died due to the regime’s actions and its allies. Al-Meslet questioned which of the two disasters is greater and emphasized the importance of ensuring that everyone keeps this fact in mind.
