The Action Group for the Palestinians of Syria has accused the security apparatus of the Assad regime of killing and forcibly disappearing dozens of Palestinian-Syrian medical personnel since the beginning of the revolution in Syria in 2011.
In a report released on International Doctors’ Day, the London-based monitoring group said that the regime’s security services continue to detain many Palestinian-Syrian medical personnel and conceal their fate. A number of these individuals have reportedly died under torture in regime prisons, supposedly for providing medical and humanitarian aid to residents of the Yarmouk refugee camp and wounded from neighboring areas.
The report included information on a number of detained doctors whose fate is still unknown, including Hayel Hameed, Alaa El-Din Youssef, Basil Omar, Imad El-Din Saeed, Muhammad Tamim, and Malek Youssef. It also revealed that over 11 doctors and medical personnel have died under torture in the regime’s prisons, including Osama Al-Khaled, Basil Sweed, and Mahmoud Hamarneh.
Palestinian-Syrian doctor, Omar Muheibesh, an ex-detainee, wrote a book in the Jordanian capital, Amman, documenting the deaths of eight Palestinian-Syrian doctors under torture inside the Mezzeh Military Prison in Damascus.
The Action Group has called for the application of the principle of protection for medical personnel, and for respect, protection, and humane treatment of civilians as stipulated in international laws.
