The Action Group for the Palestinians of Syria said that three Palestinian-Syrian brothers have been unlawfully detained for five years despite surrendering themselves to the Assad regime after assurances from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command. The Assad regime’s security services reneged on their promises to settle the brothers’ status, leading to their continued imprisonment.
The London-based monitoring group has brought attention to the plight of these individuals, identifying them as Samir Al-Barnawi (born in 1975), who was detained on September 20, 2012; Fadi Al-Barnawi (born in 1976), also detained on September 20, 2012; and Shadi Al-Barnawi (born in 1981), who was arrested in the Yarmouk camp in October 2012.
According to the group’s report, the Assad regime’s security services have detained numerous Palestinian-Syrian brothers and entire families, including women and children, whose current whereabouts remain unknown. Tragically, the group has documented cases of individuals dying under torture in Assad regime prisons, such as the three Hamdan brothers from the Yarmouk refugee camp and three sisters from the Saad al-Din family from the Raml refugee camp who tragically passed away on March 30, 2015.
In its efforts to shed light on the dire situation, the Action Group has documented a total of 3,076 Palestinian-Syrian detainees in Syrian prisons, with their fate remaining uncertain. Among them, 465 individuals, including women and the elderly, have lost their lives due to torture.
