The Association of Independent Kurds issued a statement calling for a meeting of Syrian political forces and national figures to discuss the ongoing events in Syria, particularly the policies of the PYD militia in northeastern Syria. The Association reached consensus on several key stances and recommendations.
The Association emphasized the need for political, social, and media mobilization across all Syrian regions to counter the PYD militia’s attempts to solidify their control and seize parts of Syria to declare a separate state.
The statement highlighted that the PYD militia is pursuing its objectives through a series of illegal steps, including drafting a social contract (constitution) for the region, creating a geographical map and administrative divisions, establishing new administrative units, issuing an election law, forming an election commission, and planning local and municipal elections. These actions aim to gain popular legitimacy and mislead world public opinion into believing they were elected by the Syrian people in this region.
The Association’s statement firmly rejected these illegal actions by the PYD militia, labeling it a terrorist organization occupying Syrian lands and working to divide Syria according to the agendas of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which is listed as a terrorist organization.
The statement called for urgent and comprehensive action to counter the PYD militia’s attempts to alter Syrian geography and undermine national unity. It held the international anti-ISIS coalition fully responsible for the actions of the PYD militia, stating that the coalition’s silence on these criminal acts gives implicit approval to this political and legal misconduct.
The statement urged the international community, the United Nations, and the Arab League to intervene immediately to halt this dangerous project, which clearly violates all UN resolutions on Syria, particularly Resolution 2254.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) had earlier condemned the measures, decisions, and laws enacted by the PYD militia as illegal and serious, stressing the need for international commitment to Syria’s independence and unity, territorial integrity, and the sovereignty of the Syrian people.
The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council also criticized the so-called elections, stating they “will take place in a non-neutral environment and the results will be manipulated to consolidate the PYD’s authority and hegemony, based on an ideologically driven social contract,” adding that these elections “lack legitimacy.”
Additionally, the Syrian Tribal Council announced its rejection of the planned local elections in the areas controlled by the PYD militia east of the Euphrates. This rejection was expressed during the Council’s fifth conference, held recently in the Aleppo countryside.
