Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, stressed that the Assad regime is responsible for sabotaging the sessions of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva.
Barakat told Fresh news website that in every session of the Constitutional Committee, the Assad regime deliberately starts discussions with no clear timeframes in order to empty the work of the Constitutional Committee of any value and substance. He stressed that this strategy is not aimed at disrupting the Constitutional Committee only, but also at creating a sense of desperation among all parties with regards to the political process.
He added that the Assad regime is betting on a change in regional or international positions towards Syria as a whole.
Barakat ruled out the possibility of achieving any progress in the work of the Constitutional Committee in view of the continued prevarication and obstructionism by the Assad regime.
Moreover, he made it clear that the success of the Constitutional Committee’s work hinges on the existence of a clear timetable and an agreed upon agenda, in addition to avoiding issues that do not have a clear timeframe. He pointed out that meeting these conditions can lead to a breakthrough that in turn will lead to progress in the course of the political process.
Barakat pointed out that the future sessions of the Constitutional Committee and the political process are linked to the existence of a real international will for achieving a political solution in accordance with United Nations resolutions on Syria, and the continuation of international pressure on the Assad regime to force it to seriously engage in the political process.
He stressed that the failure to meet these conditions means more sporadic sessions that are solely aimed at maintaining the negotiation track, rather than finding a real solution in Syria.
