Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, said that the latest briefing by the UN disarmament chief confirmed the Assad regime’s involvement in the use of chemical weapons and its continued production of this type of weapon.
Barakat pointed out that the Assad regime cannot hide the effects of its crimes of using chemical weapons, so it is seeking to obstruct the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) that previously held it responsible for the use of chemical weapons in various areas and on many occasions.
Barakat added that the UN Security Council must take firm measures to compel the regime to abide by UN resolutions, whether by facilitating OPCW’s work, or implementing international resolutions related to a political solution in Syria.
Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, on Thursday tool the UN Security Council that international efforts to clarify Syria’s declarations on its chemical weapons program still have not progressed.
Regarding this twenty-fifth round of consultations in Damascus between the Syrian authorities and the Declaration Assessment Team, Ms. Nakamitsu said she regretted that the Technical Secretariat still cannot carry out these consultations because of Syria’s repeated refusal to issue an entry visa for the Team’s lead technical expert.
