Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdul Majeed Barakat, emphasized that the international community’s failure to address the crimes committed by the Assad regime in Syria, such as mass displacement, killing, and demographic change, has emboldened many regimes to commit similar offenses, raising the level of crimes being committed by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip.
In an interview with the Global Justice Syria News website, Barakat stated, “Our sympathy with the Palestinian people stems from a crisis that the Syrian people have been experiencing for more than twelve years, as a result of similar crimes committed by the Assad regime.” He highlighted that the current events in Gaza mirror the atrocities witnessed in Syria, including bombings of schools, places of worship, hospitals, and mass forced displacement.
Barakat underscored that the nations exploiting the Palestinian cause are the same ones that attacked Syria and committed direct crimes akin to those by the Israeli occupation in Gaza, citing Iran, the Assad regime, Iranian militias, Hezbollah Militia, and the Russian regime.
Regarding the hijacking of the political process by the Assad regime, Barakat attributed it to the lack of genuine international will to achieve a political solution. He noted that the political process has become predominantly international, with limited popular influence, emphasizing the SOC’s efforts to combine popular, media, and global Syrian endeavors to restore priority to the Syrian crisis.
On Syrian conferences and meetings in the diaspora, Barakat expressed SOC’s support for all Syrian efforts, whether at the political or service and executive levels, emphasizing their commendable nature when directed towards implementing international resolutions.
