Abdul Majeed Barakat, the Secretary of the Political Committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has stated that readmitting the Assad regime to the Arab League and normalizing relations with it will neither serve stability in Syria nor alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.
Speaking to the Arabi21 news website, Barakat emphasized that the reasons for freezing the regime’s membership in the League still exist and that its rightful place should be in international courts. He added that free normalization with the regime will not contribute to achieving the aspirations of the Syrians, and reiterated the SOC’s refusal to subject the Syrian file to regional bargaining.
Barakat also reaffirmed the SOC’s commitment to implementing UN resolutions on Syria, especially the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254, calling for a real political transition for the country.
