The Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) Political Committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, pointed out that the SOC Coalition worked, since the first hours of the earthquake, to form an emergency committee with the aim of responding to the disaster and alleviating the suffering of those affected.
In remarks to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper, Barakat indicated that the committee worked on two levels, the first to coordinate humanitarian work and secure the opening of crossings, the arrival of aid to those who deserve it, and the removal of debris, and the second level is responsible for securing international aid.
Barakat indicated that the SOC communicated with many Arab countries to provide aid, and with the Turkish authorities to open the border crossings and repair the roads leading to the Bab al-Hawa crossing, in addition to making efforts to open the Bab al-Salama and al-Rai crossings. He said the entry of aid refutes the excuses that are repeated to justify the inaction of the international community.
Regarding plans to secure housing for the afflicted whose homes were destroyed, Barakat stressed that “the disaster exceeds the available resources as the region is already suffering from difficult conditions on the humanitarian level. The earthquake came to make things worse, and revealed the shamelessness of the international community in its dealings with the residents of northwestern Syria.
Barakat pointed out that efforts are currently focused on the humanitarian aspect, which includes providing food, shelters, and treatment.
