The Syrian National Coalition’s Department of Foreign Relations, the Office of Strategic Consulting, and the Office of Studies met to discuss the basic elements in the rules of procedure of the Constitutional Committee. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced the formation of the Committee on the sidelines of the 74th meeting of the UN General Assembly in September.
Participants in the meeting stressed the importance of abiding by the rules of procedure governing and facilitating the work of the Committee and its timetable. They called on the international community to ratchet up pressure on the Assad regime and not to allow it to disrupt the political process.
Moreover, the participants stressed the United Nations’ important role in the political process in its entirety, stressing the need to continue to deal positively with the United Nations which oversees the work of the Committee in Geneva, Switzerland.
They also stressed that though the Committee will help revitalize the political process, it will not obviate the need to implement international resolutions on Syria, most importantly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council Resolution 2254 in the sequence set out in those resolutions.
The participants also stressed the need to join ranks and work with everyone to produce a clear picture of the new constitution of the country guaranteeing the rights of all Syrian citizens and forming the groundwork for the work of the Transitional Governing Body (TGB) and the holding of fair, free elections under the auspices of the United Nations.
