A delegation from the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) and the Syrian Negotiations Commission met with the Deputy Representative of the United States to the United Nations, Richard Mills, and discussed with him the latest developments on the ground and in the political process.
The delegation comprised SOC’s President Salem al-Meslet, President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission Badr Jamous, Co-chair of the Constitutional Committee Hadi al-Bahra, Head of the Syrian interim government Abdurrahman Mustafa, and members of the Negotiations Commission Ibrahim Berro and Fadwa al-Ujaili.
The meeting focused on the need for revitalizing the political process; implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2254 in order to reach a real political transition in Syrian; and exerting real pressure on the regime to seriously engage in the political process.
The delegation stressed the importance of maintaining the sanctions imposed on the Assad regime under the Caesar Act and preventing any attempt to normalize relations with it. It also stressed that the lukewarm response to the Assad regime encouraged Iran to intervene in the region and Putin to invade Ukraine.
The delegation spoke about the need to ensure accountability; seek the release of detainees and those forcibly disappeared in the prisons of the Assad regime; and ensure humanitarian access to those need in Syria.
