The delegation of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) and the Syrian Negotiations Commission met with Stephen Hickey, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations, and discussed with him the latest the field and political developments in Syria on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The delegation spoke about the importance of revitalizing the political process in Syria and supporting political transition in accordance with UN resolutions, especially the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254. They stressed that the restoration of stability to the region requires finding a real solution in the country that guarantees the achievement of the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom, dignity and democracy and holding those responsible for war crimes accountable.
For his part, Mr. Hickey reaffirmed his country’s rejection of normalization of ties with the Assad regime, adding that his country is coordinating this position with allies to prevent any attempt to rehabilitate the Assad regime.
He also spoke about the UK’s role in sending cross-border humanitarian aid to those in need in Syria, and stressed the need to extend the UN resolution on the delivery of humanitarian aid.
