Abdulbasit Abdullatif, Secretary of the political committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has strongly condemned the ongoing atrocities committed by the PYD terrorist militia against civilians across areas it controls east of the Euphrates River.
Abdullatif emphasized in a press statement that the PYD terrorist militia persistently engages in crimes against civilians, including arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial killings, torture, kidnapping, and the forced recruitment of child soldiers.
He underscored that backing the PYD militia exacerbates civilian suffering and drives residents to flee to safer locations outside the country. Abdullatif called for an end to support for the militia and urged accountability for those responsible for these crimes.
Reports from the local Khabour news network detailed the tragic death of Khaled Al-Hamid, who died due to torture and poor health after eight years of detention in the PYD-run Alaya prison in Qamishli. Additionally, the PYD militia’s abduction of 15-year-old Ahmed Habash in Qamishli for militia recruitment underscores the ongoing human rights violations.
These incidents coincide with PYD militia raids on civilian homes in multiple neighborhoods in Hasakah, resulting in the arrest of 16 individuals on ISIS affiliation charges.
According to the European Union’s Eurostat Centre, in 2022, 25% of minors seeking asylum were first-time applicants, with 20% of them being Syrians. Among the over 222,000 minors seeking asylum, 19% were unaccompanied. The center highlighted that forced recruitment by the PYD militia east of the Euphrates is a leading factor driving residents to flee, compounded by economic hardships and living crises.
