Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Ruba Habboush, warned that the forced return of Syrian refugees from Lebanon to areas under the control of the Assad regime constitutes a crime and a violation of international law.
Habboush called on the Lebanese authorities to stop insisting on returning the refugees to where they will face a grim fate in the areas under the control of the murderous Assad regime.
Habboush made these remarks as Lebanon began the return of the first batch of Syrian families to regime-held areas. The batch comprises about 200 families as part of what the Lebanese government called the “voluntary return program.”
Habboush stressed that Syria is still not safe as the current conditions in the country are not suitable for the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of refugees. She warned that the forcibly returned refugees will face the risk of arbitrary arrests and torture in the prisons of the Assad regime. (Source: SOC’s media department)
