United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “deeply concerned by the recent and extensive violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” by Israeli occupation airstrikes in the country, according to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Thursday.
Dujarric said that “the Secretary-General is particularly concerned over the hundreds of Israeli airstrikes on several locations in Syria,” calling for urgent de-escalation “on all fronts, throughout Syria.”
The statement from the UN chief stressed that the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement “remains in force” and must be upheld, “including by ending all unauthorized presence in the area of separation and refraining from any action that would undermine the ceasefire and stability in Golan.”
Saudi Arabia condemned the Israeli occupation’s actions, including seizing the buffer zone in the Golan Heights and targeting Syrian territory. It stated that these actions demonstrate the occupation’s continued violations of international law and its intent to undermine Syria’s security, stability, and territorial integrity.
France and the UAE likewise denounced Israel’s move to enter the buffer zone.
Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) President Hadi Al-Bahra also condemned all Israeli occupation attacks against Syria and its societal infrastructure, particularly during the critical conditions the Syrian people are currently going through.
In an interview with BBC, Al-Bahra called on the international community to take appropriate measures to ensure compliance with all previously signed agreements between Syria and the occupying state, including ceasefire agreements and armistice agreements from 1974 and 1949.
