The joint delegation of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) and Syrian Negotiations Commission (SNC) to the United States met the Canadian mission to the United Nations on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly. The two sides discussed the latest developments on the ground and in the political process in Syria.
The meeting brought together SNC’s President Anas Abdah, SOC’s Vice-president Abdul Hakim Bashar, SNC’s member Fadwa Al-Ujaili, and the Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Bob Rae and his accompanying delegation.
The joint delegation expressed its thanks and appreciation to the Canadian ambassador for his country’s important role in supporting the Syrian people at the humanitarian and political levels, as well as for hosting Syrian refugees.
The delegation stressed the importance of stepping up political support to the Syrian opposition in order to force the Assad regime to engage in the political process that has been stalled due to the latter’s obstructionism.
The delegation stressed the need to reject any kind of normalization with the Assad regime or to rehabilitate it under the pretext of humanitarian aid in view of the crimes it is committing against humanity.
Rae spoke about his country’s continued role in providing humanitarian support to the Syrian people, stressing that the solution in Syria can only be achieved by implementing UN resolutions, most notably Resolution 2254.
