Abdullah Kaddo, a member of the political committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), emphasized that the Assad regime has not changed its strategy and continues to commit crimes against civilians, with the international community turning a blind eye. He strongly condemned the recent arrest of two women and two children from the town of Kanaker in the Damascus countryside, aimed at pressuring their relatives to surrender.
In a press statement, Kaddo remarked that these heinous crimes occur despite efforts by many countries and international organizations to convince Syrians that the Assad regime is creating a safe environment for the return of refugees. He highlighted that the international community’s misguided decisions over the past 13 years have resulted in numerous global crises and prolonged Syria’s humanitarian crisis.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) reported that the Assad regime arrested the two women and two children while they were receiving treatment at a medical center in the Barzeh district of Damascus. The Network obtained information indicating that the arrests were intended to take the victims hostage to force a relative to surrender to the regime’s security agencies.
The rights group noted numerous instances of the Assad regime arresting family members of individuals on their wanted list, often targeting the most vulnerable members, such as women and children, not to extract information but to exact revenge and apply pressure for the wanted individuals to surrender.
