Member of the Syrian Coalition’s political committee Michel Kilo said that the international community must punish Russia and deter its aggression on Syria, warning that Russia’s heinous behavior in Syria is drawing the world to the precipice of chaos and mayhem. He pointed out that Russia’s actions threaten the creation of the same conditions Hitler’s policies created and which led to the breakout of World War II.
On the sidelines of the Coalition’s 30th General Assembly meetings which began on Saturday, Kilo said that Russia’s decision to ramp up its air campaign in Syria indicates that Russia leads the war on the Syrian people and that it is determined to help the Assad regime win the war.
By deploying more aircrafts to Syria, Russia chose to escalate confrontation with the international community and its institutions which are seeking to find a political solution in Syria, Kilo stressed. He added that Russia’s actions risk fueling the conflict by committing more firepower on the side of regime forces. The main task of the warplanes Russia has recently sent to Syria is bombing civilians and vital civilian structures.
Kilo added that Russia’s increasing involvement in the war in Syria is an act of defiance to the United States and the Arab world and that Russia’s decision followed suggestions by US officials that friends of the Syrian people might supply rebel fighters with new weapons to ward off the Russian aggression on Syria.
Russia’s decision to escalate violence also shows that Russia is not behaving like a superpower, but as a “super mafia state” having wriggled out of all its international, humanitarian and legal obligations. The deliberate targeting of civilians is a war crime and a crime against humanity, Kilo said. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
