The Kurdish National Council strongly condemned the brutal attack on peaceful protesters in the town of Qamishli on Monday, holding the PYD terrorist militia fully responsible for the assault.
In a statement, the Council said that this attack exposes the falseness of the PYD militia’s claims of upholding democratic values and protecting human rights. It called on societal activist groups, international and legal organizations, and notably the United States, to denounce this crime against peaceful protesters and the Kurdish National Council. The Council demanded an end to the terrorist acts carried out by the PYD militia against political freedom and the peaceful activities of the Council.
The Council highlighted that the PYD terrorist militia prevented the peaceful demonstration that the Council had organized in front of the United Nations office in Qamishli on Monday. The protest aimed to denounce the ongoing kidnapping of 15 Council members by the PYD militia, including female journalists, some of whom have been detained for over three months without their families having any information about their fate and whereabouts.
The Council reported that the PYD terrorist militia closed the gathering place and prevented the protesters from reaching the sit-in site. Consequently, the protesters decided to relocate to the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Council in the Al-Siyahi neighborhood.
While the peaceful protesters were gathering, dozens of PYD militia members attacked them, severely beating them with clubs, sticks, and stones. This assault resulted in injuries to more than thirty people, some seriously, including children and women. The attackers chanted slogans in support of the PKK terrorist organization. They also kidnapped more than twenty supporters and Council members, including members of the Council Presidency and the General Secretariat, as well as women from the families of the kidnapped. All were released hours later.
The Council noted that more than ten vehicles owned by civilians living in the neighborhood where the Council’s office is located were vandalized and destroyed by the PYD militants.
