Member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Muhammad Yahya Maktabi, condemned the violations that the Lithuanian authorities are committing against asylum seekers, stressing the need to open an investigation into the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers.
Maktabi pointed out that these abuses, which were reported by humanitarian organizations, cannot be tolerated. He called on the United Nations and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to track these abuses and to prevent the Lithuanian authorities from carrying out any more abuses against the asylum seekers.
He stressed that the unprecedented abuses that are taking place against asylum seekers in a number of European countries are troubling. He said that the reasons that drive refugees to flee their countries are well known, adding that the solution is to eliminate the root causes of the refugee crisis.
Amnesty International said that the Lithuanian authorities arbitrarily detained thousands of asylum seekers, including Syrians, in military bases, where they were held in inhumane conditions and subjected to ill-treatment.
